The MEMBERS OF THE BEACON BRASS
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Colby College, Dana Russian has been performing in Boston since 1979. He is the principal trumpeter of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and a member of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Classical Orchestra. He frequently performs with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra, and Boston Ballet Orchestra, as well as the Portland Symphony and Rhode Island Philharmonic. Dana is instructor of trumpet at Brandeis University, Wellesley College and Tufts University, and has a teaching studio at home. A car enthusiast, he enjoys getting his hands dirty working on his old BMW.
Dana Oakes, trumpet, is currently a member of the Boston Ballet, the Boston Philharmonic and the Portland Symphony. He has performed with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Rhode Island Philharmonic, New Hampshire Symphony and other regional orchestras. Dana is active in contemporary music performance with Musica Viva and Boston Modern Orchestra project. Dana has recorded for PBS and A&E as a soloist and ensemble player. A graduate of New England Conservatory, he is currently on the faculty at MIT, Boston Conservatory and the University of Massachusetts at Lowell
Kevin Owen is principal horn of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the Boston Lyric Opera, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and the Boston Philharmonic. He has been a soloist with all of the above orchestras, as well as the New Haven Symphony, the Portland (Maine) Symphony, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, the Ocean State Chamber Orchestra, the North Shore Philharmonic, the Boston University Symphony Orchestra, as well as other orchestras. He has appeared on the David Letterman and Conan O’Brien shows with the rock groups Guster and My Morning Jacket. He has toured internationally with the Empire Brass, the Boston Chamber Music Society, and was a first place winner in five chamber music competitions with the Boston Wind Quintet. He attended Boston University, where he was a Dean’s Scholar and the winner of the Outstanding Brass Player Award and the Concerto-Aria and Boston Pops competitions. He has taught at Brown University, Brandeis University, Boston Conservatory, the Longy School of Music of Bard College, and Rhode Island College.
Hans Bohn, trombone, is a member of the Boston Ballet Orchestra, Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, Odyssey Opera, Handel and Haydn Society, Emmanuel Music and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. He also appears with the Boston Symphony and the orchestras in Springfield, Rhode Island, Portland, Grand Rapids and the Orchestra de Mineria in Mexico. As a chamber musician he is member of the acclaimed Burning River Brass as well as Proteus 7 and has performed with the Empire Brass Quintet, Brass Ring and the Battle Creek Brass Band. Hans is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Northwestern University and is currently Professor of Trombone at the University of Massachusetts/Lowell.
Donald Rankin, tuba, has been an active performer in the Boston Area for over 20 years. He is currently Principal Tuba of the Boston Ballet Orchestra, the Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Philharmonic, and Portland Symphony and the Boston Modern Orchestra project. He has also performed with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops and well as many of the choral groups in New England including Cantata Singers, Masterworks Chorale and the John Oliver Chorale. Don can be heard on recordings of the Boston Philharmonic and Boston Modern Orchestra Project.
